Prathima Hospitals Successfully Performs “Exceedingly Rare and Complex Surgery”
Liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer in worldwide and it is the second most common cause of death from cancer. WHO estimates that 7,88 ,000 people die from primary liver cancer every year. Hepatocellular carcinoma has been recognized as a leading cause of death among patients with cirrhosis, and its incidence is expected to increase in the future. More than half of these deaths (60%) are caused by the long-term consequences of chronic hepatitis B and C infections. A 71 year male patient by name Madhava Rao from Secunderabad, came to hospital with pain in abdomen and weight loss symptoms. On investigations he was found to have huge Liver cancer involving the 60 % of total liver with cancer extending along the IVC (Inferior Vena cava) into right Heart. He was Diabetic and also underwent CABG 10 yrs back in such condition patient may die any time because of tumor thrombo embolism which can cause sudden cardio pulmonary arrest.
This was a challenging task for Doctor’s to prepare him for surgery as it requires both liver transplantation skills and cancer principles, Dr. Madhusudhan performed surgery Successfully using Extended left hepatectomy with IVC and rt atrial (heart) tumor thrombectomy under total vascular exclusion with in situ hypo thermia (freezing liver with ice cold preservative solutions, surgery went on for 6 long hours and gave a new lease of life to the patient. This surgery was done on 1st May, 2021.

Majority of liver cancers are asymptomatic. They present with unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, jaundice, Abdominal swelling, swelling of lower limbs.60 % of liver cancer patients present with advanced stage. The Liver cancer is a dual disease exists in single patient and occurs in the chronic liver disease background, treatment depends not only on cancer stage but also status of liver condition. Some patients require liver transplantation when their liver function is very bad even though cancer is in early stage. Very few such complex surgeries were done in the world and in India. Dr.Madhusudhan said he had performed first such case 3 years back and presented video in “world congress” at Geneva, Switzerland, this is the second successful case done at Prathima Hospital, Kachiguda he further added.
